This unit explores the roles of individuals in history. Individuals' characteristics and how actions impact history. The questions is how and why? What makes a leader, innovator, influencer, and changer in history? And what are the complexity of their role in regards to each other during significant events in history?

Perspective-
As a Bowie I would say that it was the peoples' will for the change of Government. The Mexicans cannot constrain them including me from liberty because we will die for it if it is a must. My knife and I can destroy General Santa Anna's fearlessly. Even if I am a Mexican Citizen and husband to the Province's Vice-Governor, I,as well as the commonwealth, deserve our rights. Santa Anna, by removing the Constitution of 1824 and establishing his own dictatorship he has angered us. As part of the Provisional Government of Texas, I will retaliate. I have said before thaat, "I will do as I have been commanded; as for what that is..." If I die, I will make sure they find no bullets in my back. The people will be free from under another peoples' rule. Even over the dead bodies of my comrades and mine these Mexicans will not rule our lands and families and we will live freely.
A cause of this chaotic war was because of those Mexicans! They don't know when to quit do they? When we Americans moved over there, we did not get our freedom that was promised. We were discriminated! Those Natives didn't care if we helped them in their Independence, we got less rights then they did. And why so? Because we came from America! When they insulted us we called those Mexicans "greasers" or "bean eaters". They tried to force us to learn their forsaken beliefs when ours are better! Even if I'm a famous General so what? Fame is like a shaved pig with a greased tail, and it is only after it has slipped through the hands of some thousands, that some fellow, by mere chance, holds on to it! And I happen to be that fellow!

ReplyDeleteOne of the main reasons for the American revolution was increasing tension between the Mexicans and Americans due to filibusters. Also, the french, hatian, and Mexican revolutions proved to Americans that they could be free as well. I greatly impared the American revolution as one of Santa Anna's most trusted generals, punishing the Texans at the Alamo. Commenting on Edward's post, that's a very strong comment on the revolution, and I agree that you Americans were extremely discriminated against, and you had very little rights, causing unrest and finally the revolution.
The only reason we are in this revolution is because of Santa Anna. He raised our taxes and reaffirmed slavery abolition. And when Stephen F. Austin went over to Mexico to peacefully discuss with Santa Anna about our desire to establish Tejas as a independent state, guess what he did? He threw Austin in jail! We just want to be independent- or at least an independent state! Look at the United States of America right now. They gained their independence a while ago, and look at them now! Imagine Tejas like that...a free country...No Santa Anna to boss us around...Just a democracy where people have a say in the law.
ReplyDeleteBUT, this has not become reality- yet. The only way in order to get what we want now is war. It's not pleasant, but it's what we have to do.
-Sam Houston (Amy Fan)
I believe that everything this republic does is based off of our conscious! We will fight for freedom! As Bowie said, " If I die, I will make sure they find no bullets in my back." This is our fight! Our fight for freedom and justice. Those damn Mexicans ain't got nothing on us! We will have to take a stand! Santa Anna here we come!

ReplyDeleteAnd Bowie, I admire your courage against Santa Anna. We need fearless people who are willing to fight.(although I fear Texas has too many of these types of people)If our army can be strong and we can keep our spirit, we will be able to defeat Santa Anna and gain our independence.
Stephen F. Austin. (Jennifer Lee)
ReplyDeleteWe, Texans, were eager to gain independence from Mexico, and I believe that we did the right thing to go against them. But yes, since I made Sana Anna "displeased" I was sent to jail; I merely wanted to have a voice in this nonsense! The promises that the Mexicans gave us was destroyed, and that’s why we rebelled. I only wanted to have peace but no one would listen. I do not want to blame either side of this because everyone is at their own fault. The Mexicans did not keep their promise but we rebelled when we could have talked it out peacefully. But in the end we still got what we wanted.
Response to Sam Houston (Amy Fan):
ReplyDeleteThank you, dear Houston, for blaming your rebellion solely on me. This makes me feel strongly in two directions however. One is pride in that you can consider one man alone a reason to start a war, and secondly, I feel strongly offended that you would lay blame upon my head for what you chose, of your own accord, to do.
First of all, I have given you almost complete freedom in Tejas. What can you possibly be complaining about? No soldiers, more land than one can ever want, and money from the government in cases as well!
As for Stephen F. Austin, I'll have you know that my jail cells are of such fine quality (at any rate better than the average Texians' dwelling) that Austin may consider himself in luxury hotel!
Tejas is a free country Houston! What can you want from me? To rid the Mexican government and implant an Americanized one, is that the sole purpose of your war? Look again Houston, and see the foolishness and error in your decision for war!
Santa Anna - (Liana Wang )
Santa Anna Perspective:
ReplyDeleteYou are right, dear Texians. It is the fault of the Mexican Government. How I look back at my error! We were so lax and foolish in our ways, enough to grant you adventurers such generous plots of land that their boundaries cannot be seen with the naked eye! Such as I told my advisers with sorrow -"These colonists were in possession of the vast and rich lands which an earlier Mexican Congress-with an unbelievable lack of discretion-had given them." Yes, it is our Mexican Congress' fault that this fatal war will occur.
We have given you so much, and in return ask for only obedience to three small laws. Like a spoiled child, you can only ask for more, and now the tantrum you throw is war. It is unwise, I warn. The avarice and lust for more is unsatiable in your case, and so we have the sad result of a rebellion, a war.
We did not force you to live in Tejas. You wanted the rights of America, then go to America! This is Tejas, Mexico. This is where the Mexican Law comes into play, not the American law. If you are disattisfied, then by all means, LEAVE! I never asked for pests in the first place.
I suppose this is what happens when that breed of people known as Americans get hold of a land, especially a beautiful one. No sooner than they have settled in up is the cry of "Freedom!" Thus they have done so to Britain, and now they will do so to Mexico? This is a mournful chain of events.
Avarice, greed, lust, and no sense of rationality are the sole reasons of this war.
Oh Texians...

Sach and Liana has some strong evidence in their comments: This revolution can be trace back to the fillibusters and Austin's colonists. Even before Santa Anna's dictatorship. What about the "American ideology of government"?
